POSITION — Is Where You Stand Helping You Grow?

Have you ever worked hard, given your best, and still felt as though you were going nowhere? Sometimes we need to examine more than our effort. We need to examine our position.

Where are you spending your time? Whose advice are you following? Which conversations are shaping your attitude?

Your position in life influences your direction—and the company you keep can influence both.

An electrician understands that a connection matters. Equipment can be well designed and perfectly suited to its purpose, but connecting it incorrectly can prevent it from working as intended and create danger. We carefully consider our electrical connections. Do we give the same attention to the people and influences we connect our lives to?

God’s Word repeatedly calls us to be wise about where we stand and whom we allow to lead us.

Psalm 1:1–3 describes the person who refuses to follow ungodly counsel, settle into sinful ways, or join those who mock. Instead, this person delights in God’s instruction and is compared to a tree planted beside streams of water, bearing fruit in season.

Notice the progression: walking, standing, sitting. What starts as listening can become participating. What becomes familiar can eventually become where we settle.

We rarely arrive at the wrong destination in one step. Sometimes we get there through small compromises, repeated conversations, and influences we never stop to question.

Who is influencing your next step?

Proverbs 13:20 teaches that walking with the wise helps us become wise, while companionship with fools brings harm.

Think about that on a job site. Spend enough time with people who take pride in doing things correctly, and their discipline can strengthen your own. They challenge you to check your work, keep learning, and take responsibility.

But spend your days with people who laugh at doing things properly, dismiss every opportunity to learn, and always blame someone else, and those attitudes can start sounding normal.

Eventually, “I would never do that” can become “Everyone does it.”

The same happens in our spiritual lives. Constant negativity can wear down gratitude. Gossip can become our normal conversation. People who ridicule faith can make us hesitant to live ours openly.

Being comfortable in a circle does not always mean that circle is helping you grow.

This is not a call to think we are better than others. We all need grace, correction, and patience. A struggling friend is not automatically a harmful influence, and someone who challenges you may be exactly the person God uses to help you mature.

Proverbs 27:17 describes iron sharpening iron. Sharpening involves friction. Good company will not always tell you what you want to hear; sometimes they will lovingly tell you what you need to hear.

The question is: Are these relationships drawing me towards truth, responsibility, and Christ—or repeatedly pulling me away?

Jesus loved people whom others rejected. He spent time with sinners without allowing their sin to determine His direction. We are called to love people too, while remaining discerning about whose counsel we trust and whose example we follow.

You can care for someone without joining every conversation. You can forgive someone and still set a boundary. You can offer help without giving another person control over your direction.

Sometimes growth requires a change of position.

That may mean leaving a conversation when it turns into gossip. It may mean refusing to join colleagues in cutting corners. It may mean spending less time with people who continually encourage destructive choices and more time with people who strengthen your faith and hold you accountable.

It also means asking an uncomfortable question: What influence am I having on others?

Am I the person who encourages growth, or the one who laughs when someone tries to change? Do I bring peace to the workplace, or add fuel to every complaint? Do my words help others stand stronger?

We cannot ask God for wise company while refusing to become wise company ourselves.

Your position is not simply your job title, your bank balance, or your circumstances. Some circumstances cannot change immediately. Yet even there, you can begin to choose whose voice you trust, which habits you feed, and how you respond.

God can meet you where you are. His invitation may also require you to take a step.

This week, take an honest look at where you have planted yourself:

  • Whose advice carries the most weight in my life?

  • Which relationships strengthen my faith and character?

  • Where have I become comfortable with something God is calling me to leave?

  • Who might grow stronger through my encouragement this week?

Position yourself where truth can challenge you, wisdom can guide you, and your faith can grow. Then help someone else grow beside you.

Let us pray:

Father, give us wisdom to recognise the influences shaping our lives. Help us love people with humility while setting boundaries where they are needed. Give us courage to leave harmful patterns and receive correction from those who care about us. Plant us firmly in Your truth, and make us people who encourage others towards You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
